This year, Christmas will be the first in two years that South Africans will be able to come together without restrictions related to covid-19.
In the run up to the “most wonderful time of the year”, News24 took to the streets to ask how South Africans were feeling.
The most common feeling was excitement and relief at having survived the worst of the pandemic.
Donald Majebe, told News24:
During the pandemic, no one knew when it would end or when we would be able to celebrate with our families again, and it seemed that for a long time this would not even be possible; This Christmas is going to be good.
For Nisa Adams, the last two years have been difficult. She lives in Johannesburg, but her family is in Cape Town. Getting back to ‘normal’ is bringing festive cheer. “I am very excited to see my family back in Cape Town now that the restrictions are lifted,” she said.
Amy Samson shares the same sentiment; she said this December would be one for the books.
“I am very excited to be able to go out with my friends and enjoy this December.”
Despite the continued load reduction, our respondents see the bright side.
“Last Christmas was very bad, I work long hours and I can’t wait to sit with my family, laugh and relax,” said Nokuthula Phakathi, an elderly caretaker.
