The City of Cape Town has urged residents to use water sparingly amid continued head loss, which is affecting water supplies.
Councilor Siseko Mbandezi, acting MMC for Water and Sanitation, said the prolonged load interruption affected the ability of water treatment plants to sustain production and pumping stations, which ensure the movement of water through the supply network.
Mbandezi said that the city’s daily water consumption exceeded 900 million litres, which is significantly more than the daily target of R850 million litres.
“The potential knock-on effect affects the city’s ability to fill the reservoirs as quickly as necessary to meet demand,” Mbandezi warned.
He said the water pumps might not efficiently deliver water to high areas due to head loss.

“Some higher areas may experience low water pressure or supply interruptions in the event of power outages that affect the booster water pumping stations needed to transport water to the reservoirs that serve the higher areas of the city,” said the acting MMC.
Mbandezi urged residents to adopt water-saving strategies to ensure a sufficient supply.
These are some of the rules in force at all times:
- Hoses used for watering or washing vehicles (where permitted) must be equipped with a control device such as a spray nozzle or automatic shutoff device.
- Watering is only allowed before 09:00 or after 18:00. This applies to irrigation and irrigation with municipal drinking water and is also recommended for alternative water, for example, water from wells and wells.
- All pools must be covered to prevent evaporation when not in use.
- Just flush the toilets and wash when needed. This will also help reduce pressure on the sewerage network and wastewater treatment works.
