A California man was arrested Wednesday night after he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at police.
At approximately 5:40 pm Wednesday, Corning Police Department officers began investigating a loud banging noise coming from outside the police department in the 700 block of Fourth Street.
The suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Cassidy Russ, began “groping for an object near the front of her waist,” the police department said in a news release. As the officers gave the suspect verbal commands, Russ ignited a Molotov cocktail and hurled it towards police. The Molotov cocktail missed the officer and exploded near a parked vehicle.

A Molotov cocktail is a homemade bomb made from a bottle filled with gasoline and stuffed with a piece of cloth that is ignited just before the bottle is thrown.

Police say an officer observed Russ walking away from the police department after the bomb deployment and toward Solano Street.
Authorities say officers pursued Russ after observing him near the apartment. An off-duty officer accosted Russ in the 1300 block of Solano Street, but Russ continued to resist arrest by hiding his hands by his waistband and backpack.
The department discovered that Russ had active warrants for his arrest for the same crime he previously committed: throwing a Molotov cocktail at marked police cars.

Officers used baton beatings and pain control techniques to subdue Russ, who continued to resist arrest, police said. The officers eventually took Russ into custody and handcuffed him under sustained resistance.
According to the Corning Police Department, this was not the first time Russ had thrown a Molotov cocktail at police officers. Russ had an active warrant for his arrest for an earlier incident in late July when he threw a Molotov cocktail near where the police department stages marked patrol cars.

Russ was booked into the Tehama County Jail on various charges, including attempted murder, possession of an explosive device, arson, assault on a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest. He is being held without bond in the Tehama County Jail and will appear in court next week, December 6.
