James Majok Chol Madol is in his second year at LASS. Majok formerly served as the “Papa” of the Hope and Martha care group. Becoming a care group leader was a pivotal turning point in his life. Initially, he thought the role might be a burden and hindrance to his academic performance. However, Majok shared that the opportunity transformed into a profound journey of personal growth and societal impact.

Leading a diverse group of students from different tribes challenged his preconceived notions and stereotypes. He was forced to step outside his comfort zone and appreciate the rich diversity of cultures within LASS and South Sudan as a whole. Through shared experiences, laughter, and vulnerability, Majok witnessed firsthand the power of unity in diversity. These relationships have fostered a deep-rooted respect for cultural differences, transforming him into a more empathetic and inclusive individual.

Care group leadership strengthened Majok’s conflict resolution skills as well. Navigating disagreements, misunderstandings, and emotional outbursts among students in his care group required patience, active listening, and effective communication. He learned to approach conflicts as opportunities for growth rather than threats. By mediating disputes and finding common ground, he cultivated a harmonious environment where everyone felt heard and valued.

Overall, the experience of serving as the “Papa” instilled in him a strong work ethic. Balancing academic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and care group leadership demands exceptional time management and dedication. Witnessing the commitment and resilience of his group members inspired Majok to pursue similar leadership roles in the future and strive for excellence in all aspects of his life going forward.
