British police said on Tuesday they had opened a murder investigation after the headmistress of an elite private school was found dead along with her husband and 7-year-old daughter.

Emma Pattison, 45, was found dead along with her husband George, 39, and their daughter Lettie in the early hours of Sunday morning at their home in the grounds of Epsom College, about 16 miles southwest of London.

Surrey Police said officers found a gun at the scene and the firearm was licensed and registered to George Pattison. The police force did not confirm the cause of death and said it will not arrive until postmortem examinations are complete.

No one else was involved and there was no major threat to the community, police added. An investigation was underway to establish all the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Epsom College, a fee-paying private school for boys aged 11 to 18, said it was working with police in their investigation.
