Police on the Indonesian resort island of Bali have arrested an Italian fugitive wanted on mafia-related drug charges, Italian authorities said Wednesday.

Antonio Strangio, 32, was arrested at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport as he disembarked from a flight from Australia, where he had lived since 2016, paramilitary carabinieri police said.

Strangio was wanted for alleged drug production and trafficking, and was subject to an Interpol “red notice.” He is affiliated with the Strangio clan of San Luca, at the heart of Calabria’s ‘ndrangheta organized crime syndicate, according to the statement.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed the arrest, noting it came just weeks after the capture of one of Italy’s most wanted fugitives, Matteo Messina Denaro, who was living under an assumed name not far from his hometown in Sicily.

In a statement, Meloni said that the fight against organized crime remains a government priority.
