An Austin, Texas man is facing attempted capital murder charges after he allegedly stabbed a Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office officer multiple times at a grocery store in Austin on Saturday.
Members of the Austin Police Department responded to reports of a stabbing at the HEB supermarket on Riverside Drive on Saturday, according to a department news release, and when they arrived, they learned that 40-year-old Jaime Canales had stabbed an officer with the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office. .
Police investigated using surveillance video and witness statements and discovered that Canales was shoplifting from the store.

As he started to leave the store, members of the store’s Loss Prevention staff stopped him and asked him to put down the merchandise.
Canales, police said, returned the items and requested the assistance of a member of the police in the matter.
An officer with the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the supermarket for his regular shift at the store and, according to police, approached the group to assist with the investigation.

The officer spoke to Canales, who then stabbed the officer multiple times, including in the neck, police said.
The deputy was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated surgically for his injuries. Police added that the officer is a former Austin Police Department officer and is recovering from his injuries.
Canales was arrested, police said, and admitted to stabbing the officer, showing no remorse.
He was charged with attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer and an Austin judge ordered that he be set on $100,000 bail.
The Travis County Odyssey Portal shows that Canales is no stranger to crime in the Austin area.

He has a history of shoplifting, robbery and assault, including once attacking and threatening his mother, police said.
In 2016, Canales was arrested for robbery but pleaded guilty to a lesser assault charge, for which he was ordered to spend 120 days in jail.
