Akufo-Addo Urges African Leaders To Change ‘African Narrative’ At US-Africa Leaders Summit

• Nana Akufo-Addo has urged African leaders to provide excellent leadership that can end the continent’s hallmark hunger, poverty and disease.
• Speaking at an event held as part of the US-Africa Leaders Summit, Nana Akufo-Addo said that the fate of all blacks is tied to Africa.
• He said African leaders must help make Africa the place for investment, progress and prosperity.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged his fellow leaders on the African continent to provide excellent leadership that can change the African narrative.

Speaking at the Closing Plenary of the Young African and Diaspora Leaders Forum held as part of the US-Africa Leaders Summit, Akufo-Addo urged leaders to end disease, hunger , poverty and illegal mass migration that have characterized African history.

“Let us all remember that the fate of all blacks, no matter where they are in the world, is tied to Africa. We must never forget the famous admonition of the celebrated Jamaican reggae star, Peter Tosh, when he said: ‘It doesn’t matter what where you come from. As long as you are a black man, you are African,’” he appealed on December 13, 2022.

He said African leaders must help make Africa the place for investment, progress and prosperity, not where young people flee in the hope of accessing the mirage of a better life in Europe, Asia or the Americas.

“That is what ‘Beyond the Return’ seeks to do, so that we can reap maximum dividends from our relations with the diaspora in win-win cooperation and as partners for shared growth and development,” he added.

In the meantime, yen.com.gh has reported in a separate story that President Nana Akufo-Addo has been cited for what critics say is an inadequate disbursement of the meager state funds under his administration.

Bright Simons of the influential think tank Imani Center for Policy and Education told Bloomberg that under the current president, Ghana has been living beyond its means.

“[The cathedral project ] is the perfect example of the spending spree: Ghana behaving like a fabulously wealthy sultanate in the Gulf rather than a developing country that has just achieved frontier market status,” Simons told Bloomberg.
