As a South African, whether you’re from the streets or not, you’ve probably heard the word izaka or zaka a few times, but you’re not sure what it really means.

WORD OF THE DAY IN SOUTH AFRICAN BLOOD: ZAKA
The word inyuku, most popular in the municipalities of Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, simply means money.
The origin of the word, as with most mzansi slang words, is in the streets, where anyone with artistic creativity and a habit of endless, loud speaking can create words.
So how do you use it in an English sentence?
Here’s an example: “I need to go home to KwaZulu Natal but I don’t have izaka.”
Mzansi slang words from last week:
Wednesday December 7 – Isgela
Thursday, December 8 – iTransi
Friday December 9 – iDladla
Saturday December 10 – iSgubhu
Monday December 12 – iPhara
Wednesday December 14 – iSpaan.
