JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – Fiber to the Room (FTTR) deployment is set to provide an optimal fiber broadband experience for users in South Africa.

Openserve and Huawei jointly unveiled the new home networking solution at the 25th AfricaCom in Cape Town recently.

Openserve, a Telkom subsidiary, outlined its plan to put FTTR products into commercial use by 2023.

The FTTR solution has been well received in pilot projects carried out by Openserve and Huawei in South Africa.

Motlalepula Ramaisa, Business Products and Innovation Executive at Openserve, reported the positive response.

Openserve, South Africa’s largest fixed network operator, has committed to providing premium broadband networks for home and business users.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, home office, online learning, and entertainment activities have increased, demanding more bandwidth and online experience.

Openserve believes that the FTTR solution can give them a competitive advantage in the broadband market and significantly improve end users’ home networking experience.

According to one user: “Even in a big house, I can enjoy an optimal Internet access experience with high-speed Wi-Fi coverage in every corner.”

FTTR consists of a master FTTR unit and several slave FTTR units connected by optical fibers, creating a fully optical indoor network. The Master and Slave communicate with each other via fiber optics, which prevents Wi-Fi signal interference and attenuation in distant rooms.

FTTR is generally praised for its high-speed Wi-Fi coverage, seamless roam handover, and visualized, intelligent home network management.

Its commercial launch will build on the successful cooperation between Huawei and Openserve.
