The parking lot of a hospital on the eastern shore of Maryland partially collapsed Sunday morning after a vehicle crashed into a wall of the structure at high speed, according to authorities.

TidalHealth Peninsula Regional officials said in a Facebook post that at approximately 3:45 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle in the employee parking lot slammed into a wall at high speed, causing a section of the structure to “fail “.

The hospital is in the downtown section of Salisbury, Maryland, serving a sizable portion of the Delmarva Peninsula.

Salisbury Career Fire Fighters Local 4246 responded to the incident, saying on Facebook that around 4am, units were called to a building collapse. Crews were told they would find a portion of the second-story parking garage level collapsed.

“It appeared that the driver of the SUV in the photo struck the retaining wall at an unknown speed, which then led to an unknown chain of events that ultimately caused the structure to fail,” the post read.

He went on to say that the driver of the vehicle was taken to the emergency room, which was a stone’s throw away, for evaluation, and no other injuries were reported.

After the incident occurred, cones were installed to block vehicles from entering the parking lot, and as of 8:30 a.m., they remained in place.

According to a TidalHealth post at 9:30 a.m., on-site structural engineers assessed the damage and determined that the garage was safe outside of the area where the vehicle crashed into the wall and that the damage was limited to that area.

Still, the garage was expected to be closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic for the foreseeable future, the post said.

By 1:15 p.m., all the vehicles had been removed from the garage.

Hospital officials did not immediately respond to questions about Sunday’s incident.
