A California boy is recovering and in good spirits after a mountain lion attack landed him in the hospital.

Jack Trexler, 5, and his mother Suzie battled a mountain lion while hiking in Half Moon Bay, Calif., on Tuesday in an attack that left the boy with lacerations to his face, a fracture near his eye and scratches all over. the body. according to a GoFundMe page.

Despite the injuries, Trexler’s family says “his spirit remains intact.”

The GoFundMe post claims the mother and son were walking in the hills near their home where they have lived for 12 years when Jack ran ahead of his mother and likely scared off a juvenile mountain lion.

The GoFundMe page credits Jack’s mother for picking up the big cat and making it run away before she could pick up her son and take him to safety.

Trexler’s father, Jay, said his son described the attack to him by saying, “Dad, a mountain lion knocked me down!”

The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital after the attack where he “was examined with great care, sutured and cared for by an incredible care team.”

Trexler is now at home recovering and waiting to see if the swelling from his injuries subsides, which will determine if he needs further surgery.

“He is the bravest and most adventurous little boy I have ever met and it is no wonder if there was a boy who could fight a cougar and come out on top it would be Jack,” Amie Wagner, Jack’s aunt, wrote. in the online publication.

Jay Trexler says her family will continue to walk around their California home once her son recovers.

“We’re an outdoor-loving family and this experience won’t take that away from us,” Trexler said. “I think it’s important not to be afraid of pumas, but to take care of yourself and be alert when you’re in their habitat. Although it doesn’t happen often, things like this can happen in an instant. Large animals must be respected. who are capable of harming you or your loved ones”.
