United offers more flights to South Africa than any other North American airline
CHICAGO, July 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — United Airlines today announced new nonstop flights between Washington Dulles Airport and Cape Townbecoming the first airline to provide nonstop round-trip service from our nation’s capital to South Africa. The US Department of Transportation has awarded the airline three weekly nonstop flights, beginning on November 17, 2022 (subject to approval by the South African Government). Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online or through the United app. United began seasonal service from NY/Newark a Cape Town in 2019 and expanded to year-round service in 2022. United has more flights to South Africa than any other North American airline.

“We are delighted to further expand our Africa offer with this first direct link between Washington D.C. Y Cape Town,” saying patrick quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances. “These new flights build on our existing flights throughout the year NY/Newark a Cape Town service: together they will provide a nearly daily pattern from the US to Cape Town along with connectivity to the wider region through our Airlink partnership.”
United will soon offer a total of 19 weekly flights to Africa – in addition to these new flights to Cape Townthe airline launched direct flights from NY/Newark a johannesburg Y Washington D.C. a Accra, Ghana Y Lagos, Nigeria in 2021.
Before United’s new flight, Washington D.C. a Cape Town was the largest route between the US and Cape Town with no direct service, and DC is also home to the fifth largest South African-born population. United’s new flights will connect Cape Town to 55 US cities, representing more than 92% of US travel demand. The new flights will also allow customers to connect on Cape Town to other points of South Africaand to other countries in the southern region of the African continent with Airlink, United’s South African partner, and its Cape Town hub.
United will fly a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on this new route, which features 48 United Polaris® business class reclining seats, 21 United Premium Plus® seats and 188 economy seats. All seats are equipped with on-demand seatback entertainment to help customers pass the time and relax during their travels.
