Hosts of the 2023 African Nations Championship Algeria will be looking to become the first team to secure a place in the knockout stage when they meet Ethiopia at the Stade de Baraki on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Walia Ibexes were unlucky not to score maximum points in Saturday’s first pool A match against Mozambique and will be aiming to get their title run back on track.

Algeria began their quest for the first African Nations Championship crown when they secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Libya in the tournament’s opener last Friday.

After a goalless first half in Baraki, the decisive goal came from the penalty spot three minutes before the hour marked as Aimen Mahious converted with aplomb to deliver the hosts a dream start to the campaign.

Following a rocky pre-tournament campaign, in which they failed to win any of their three warm-up friendlies, Madjid Bougherra he will be impressed with his team’s performance on opening day and hopes it can serve as a springboard to a title run.

Algeria’s aim will be to improve on their first and only CHAN appearance, dating back to 2011, when they suffered a 1-0 loss to Sudan in the third-place playoff after losing to Angola on penalties in the semifinals.

Ethiopia, on the other hand, were guilty of a vanguard foul in their group opener as they held to a somewhat disappointing 0-0 draw with Mozambique last Saturday.

Despite being on the rise for most of the game and seeing most of the possession, the Walia Ibexes failed to convert multiple clear chances before settling for a share of the spoils.

This followed a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Morocco in their last warm-up game on 7 January thanks to a late goal by Saifeddine Alami at Rabat’s Mohammed VI Football Academy.

Abbot of WubetuThe head side in the midweek showdown knowing that failure to pick up maximum points could be a major blow to their quest for the first African Nations Championship title.

However, they must rise to the challenge of a spirited Algerian side who are unbeaten in each of the last seven meetings between the teams, posting four wins and three draws since a 3-1 defeat in their Africa Cup of Nations clash. from 1968.

team news

Ethiopia coach Wubetu Abate on January 13, 2022© Reuters

The winner of Friday’s match, Mahious, retired injured in the 61st minute and the USM Alger striker is a big doubt for Algeria.

If he fails to recover from the injury, the 28-year-old karim arabi he will push for a place in the XI, teaming up with Meziane Bentahar and Aimen Lahmri in the final third.

Bougherra went with a four of Mokhtar Belkhiter, Zineddine Belaid, Ayoub Abdellaoui Y Youcef Amine Laouafi against Libya and we expect to see an unchanged defensive setup.

After an injury-free outing against Mozambique, Ethiopia are in good health and we expect Abate to name an unchanged starting XI for Tuesday’s crucial tie.

With that said, mesud mohamed, gatoch panom Y Fuad Fereje must retain their roles in the center of the park, while Mignot Debebé and Adama City man Million Solomon should form the center back pairing.

Algeria’s possible starting line-up:
Guendouz; Belkhiter, Belaid, Abdellaoui, Laouafi; Draoui, Mrezigue; Lahmri, Kendouci, Bentahar; aribi

Ethiopia possible starting lineup:
Gebremichael; Hamid, Debebe, Solomon, Yesuf; Mohamed, Panom, Fereje; Gebremikael, Markneh, Gugsa

We Say: Algeria 1-0 Ethiopia

Riding the wave of home support, Algeria have an impressive added advantage here and will be looking to back up Friday’s display with another display of class. While we expect Ethiopia to struggle, we are backing Bougherra’s team to pick up where they left off and claim all three points on his home soil.
