Three children in Detroit were saved from a burning house last week when their cousin, who was nearby, heard screams and helped rescue them.

The unidentified cousin, who was working on the street, used a shovel to break the windows of the burning house on Syracuse Street in East Detroit last Tuesday, according to local affiliate Fox 2.

The children, ages 2, 3 and 9, were taken to the hospital along with their 31-year-old mother, who was outside the house screaming when her cousin heard them and came to help.

The family was treated for smoke inhalation but was expected to recover, according to the outlet. The heroic cousin was also treated for minor injuries.

Adnan Gobah, another cousin of the family, said the rescuer rushed to the scene after the mother screamed for help.

“Do you know how lucky they are?” Gobah told Fox 2 of the family. “When he came this way, he sees the lady, she calls for help, and he stopped and helped her. And from inside, they [brought] out the children.”

“You can see there was a fire on the first floor and on the second floor, both in the middle of the house and in the back of the house, so it could have been a lot worse, we’re grateful at this point.” Harris said.
