  • This is the most powerful S-Class ever built.
  • It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds.
  • The AMG radiator grill makes its debut in the new S-Class.

Despite an ever-shrinking segment at the hands of the ubiquitous SUVs, Mercedes-AMG hasn’t neglected the S-Class, and the new S 63 E Performance helps underline that point forcefully.

This latest addition to the range aims to set new benchmarks and integrate technology from its Formula One team like never before, while paving the way for future AMG models.

The proven 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is up front, while the rear axle gets an additional 140 kW of power from an electric motor. The hybrid powertrain is an evolution of the AMG High Performance Battery, also known as the HPB 150.

Compared to the previous HPB 80, the energy content increases from 6.1 (in the HPB 80) to 13.1 kWh in the HPB 150. This increases the all-electric range to 33 kilometers.

However, the main objective of the novel powertrain is not to endow the S-Class with a long electric range, but to effortlessly transfer 590 kW and 1430 Nm to the road.

Mercedes claims that by diverting power from the nine-speed automatic’s electric motor, they are able to fully utilize both torque outputs throughout the rev range.

With the limited-slip differential and all-wheel drive working in harmony, this results in a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 3.3 seconds and an optional top speed of 290 km/h. Another benefit of the hybrid system is that it distributes weight evenly over both axles for better cornering.

A plethora of riding modes help deploy or conserve power reserves. In Comfort Mode, when the right conditions are met, the V8 can be switched off to further reduce drag and therefore improve fuel economy.

Keen observers will also note that the S 63 E Performance is the first S-Class to inherit the more menacing AMG grille. This is complemented by striking aerodynamic devices around the front apron. The four tubes and the useful diffuser characterize the rear design.

This article has been republished with comments from Mercedes-Benz South Africa; the local automaker says the S 63 E Performance is not yet available in South Africa, but is still under consideration for the local market.
