Women in Afghanistan are now barred from getting a college education, a Taliban official told the Associated Press on Tuesday.
The Taliban have consistently cracked down on women’s rights and human rights in general since they took over the country in 2021. The crackdown began by forcing women to wear hijabs and observe other Islamic extremism restrictions under the threat of violence.
The United States and much of the world cut financial aid and froze assets belonging to Afghanistan once the Taliban took control of the country. The country had previously been run by a US-backed Afghan government, but it collapsed before the US could even complete its withdrawal.
All the senators called on President Biden to ensure that women’s rights were respected under the Taliban regime last year. The senators called on Biden to work with international partners to hold the Taliban accountable for their treatment of women.

The struggles of women in Afghanistan mirror those of women in Iran, where the country is in turmoil over violent enforcement of religious dress codes. Mahsa Amini, 22, was murdered in the custody of Iran’s Morality Police this fall after she was arrested for inappropriately wearing the headscarf.

Since then, the Iranian regime has sentenced dozens of protesters to death for criticizing the regime, including a professional footballer.
The protests have spread to more than 140 cities and towns. Reports indicate that at least 700 people have died due to government repression, including dozens of children.
“In a movement in which women are at the center, the barbaric and violent regime has used rape as a weapon to further demolish the morals of its people. They have attacked women in court, for dancing, for singing, for showing some hair, and now they are raping them in the worst possible way before stealing their lives,” Lisa Daftari, Foreign Desk editor-in-chief said in a statement.
