In the latest issue of 2022, I catch up with the young YouTube star from South Africa who is now a highly successful investor and entrepreneur. Caspar Lee has taken her social media fame and turned it into an empire. I’ll catch you again in 2023 with many more stories to tell.

Caspar Lee: from famous YouTube star to super-smart entrepreneur

By Herman Eloff

I can hear the wind howling at the corners of the surrounding buildings as I get out of my Uber at the Observatory. My phone rings and it’s a message from Caspar. He’s on his way, and his business partner Benji is meeting me in the lobby of his joint venture. It’s a busy day at Proper Living, a business focused on housing students and young professionals in Cape Town. It’s their annual New Year’s Eve party, and preparations are underway when I arrive. “We do this every year as a gift to our residents. It’s a party. On our own,” Benji Schaffer tells me as we take a quick walk through the parking lot, as it’s becoming the perfect venue for an underground concert. Moments later, Caspar arrives at the entrance with a sweater tied around his shoulders. He is taller than he had imagined when he shook my hand and we first met. I’m familiar with the successful 28-year YouTube career, but we’ve never met in person. It was Caspar himself who suggested that we meet in real life. He currently lives in London but flew in for a friend’s wedding in the Winelands and took the time to show me around his business in South Africa.

REVIEW | I was so excited to see Santa at the mall having a happy good morning with my 7 year old niece.

By Bonolo Sekudu

Participating in anything that doesn’t include me holding a glass of champagne, looking pretty, and giving off rich aunty vibes takes some convincing. If it involves children being under my supervision for hours, it is a rare and sometimes overwhelming occasion. “Don’t have children. Children are expensive,” friends of mine have told me, and I am convinced they are right. So this rich wannabe aunt didn’t want to get caught slipping off with her 7-year-old niece Tshimo, who thinks I can afford things. Just like she doesn’t need to know the truth about Santa Claus, she’s also better off in the dark about her “rich aunt’s” bank balance. I got engaged at 10:00 on a Saturday to keep up the “cool aunt” momentum. I picked her up and tried to be on time because she is very particular and the lady doesn’t like to be kept waiting.

‘Destinations exist in my mind, not just on maps’: Obie Oberholzer keeps moving beyond the horizon

By Obie Oberholzer

“Why not?” was my answer when my friend, who is a scholar, asked me why he was making a book called Happysadland. Just then my cell phone rang, ring-ring-ring, I set the ringtone to sound like the old days before the lines were stolen and less was more. It’s my other friend, the folk hero, a famous ex-Springbok rugby player who played in the days when the spectators cheered fanatically. “Don’t mention Wally Onetime,” he said and hung up rudely. I immediately included it. Wally Onetime was a diamond diver I met on the west coast in Bamboo Bay. Back then he told me: “Life without adventure is not life at all.” Now I reflect and wonder for a while and I conclude that, for many years now, I have been a vagabond and a vagabond. Willie Nelson sang it as a wild, restless spirit (“…And there’s nothing I can do about it now”).

It may be convenient, but buying pre-cut fruits and vegetables can be risky business: here’s why

By Nikita Coetzee

I don’t know about you, but I really don’t like cutting pineapple. And don’t even get me started on the watermelon and pumpkin. While I enjoy eating most fruits and vegetables, cutting them up can be a hassle. So since I want to reap the rewards without the hard work (come on, I can’t be the only one), I often turn to pre-cut fruit. And I tend to do the same with vegetables. Why spend all that energy cutting squash when I can buy it pre-cut, cubed, and perfectly packaged? It turns out that my laziness could put me at higher risk for a foodborne illness, and even if that doesn’t happen, I’m missing out on some nutrients from my food. Here are three reasons why you should stop buying pre-cut fruits and vegetables.

PHOTOS | Alfa Romeo’s new Tonale is a stunning SUV we’d all want for Christmas

By Janine Vander Post

If you dream of unpacking a new car for Christmas, Alfa Romeo’s new Tonale SUV is the one you’d want under the proverbial tree. The Italian automaker has always built beautiful masterpieces with roaring engines, and while the new Tonale is simply magnificent, it also shows the brand’s metamorphosis into a new era. This new compact crossover SUV is smaller than its big brother Stelvio, but it’s the brand’s first hybrid powertrain-powered model.

The artworks are more than just plot clues in The White Lotus season 2 – they are the silent witnesses to the show: In Western art history, a mise en abyme is a technique of placing one image within another, or one story within another story. It is meant to illuminate the hidden meaning in an image. This can also be considered as an allegory. To say that this technique is being used in The White Lotus Season 2 would be an understatement.
