The brother of the recently deceased American sportswriter Grant Wahl has gone private on Instagram after speculating that his brother was murdered.
Wahl, 48, died after “taking ill” at Lusail Stadium in the closing minutes of a FIFA World Cup quarter-final match between the Netherlands and Argentina on Friday, a Qatari spokesman said.

The veteran soccer journalist had bronchitis and had visited a medical clinic twice in the days before his death, he revealed in a podcast episode. Wahl was laughing with his colleagues minutes before his sudden death, a witness said.
Previously, Wahl had been prevented from entering a stadium while wearing a rainbow-colored jersey.

Eric Wahl announced his brother’s death on Instagram and made an emotional plea for help.
“I’m gay. I’m the reason he wore the rainbow jersey at the World Cup,” said Eric Wahl. “My brother was healthy. He told me that he received death threats. I don’t think my brother died. I think they killed him and I just ask for help.”
Eric Wahl has now taken his Instagram profile private.

Just a day before his death, Grant Wahl published a scathing criticism of the Qatari government and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, stating his indifference to the deaths of the workers who built the World Cup stadium.
“The Supreme Committee in charge of the World Cup in Qatar does not care that a Filipino migrant worker died in the Saudi Arabian training center during the group stage. He suffered a fatal blow to the head during a fall in a forklift accident (information kept secret until broken by The Athletic’s Adam Crafton).”

the Qatar Supreme Committee for Handover and Legacy issued a press release acknowledging Wahl’s death.
The committee said it is cooperating with US officials to return Wahl’s body to the US.
