According to Fox 6 Milwaukee, the US Postal Inspection Service also confirmed that the victim was a mail carrier.

“That’s the most devastating part, like we all get up every day to go to work and support our families,” neighbor Jeff Brown told the outlet. “Is it really so bad that we have to look over our shoulders to go and support our families?”

Police said it’s unclear what led to the shooting, but the incident is under active investigation. The US Postal Inspection Service and the FBI are assisting Milwaukee police in the case.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson issued the following statement hours after the shooting:

“The shooting death of a Milwaukee postal worker is alarming. My thoughts are with the victim’s family and colleagues. The postal worker in this homicide was a public servant, which makes this crime all the more troubling. Criminals responsible for death and damage in our city must be held accountable. To do that, anyone with information about this crime, or another serious crime in Milwaukee, must come forward.”

As of Friday night, there are no known suspects and no one is in custody.

“The Milwaukee Police Department sends our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and the USPS on the loss of their limb,” the department said in a news release.
