The village manager in a northern Michigan community resigned after an investigation into $32,000 in erroneous payroll payments to public workers.
The mistake in Elk Rapids occurred in October 2021, but the public was left in the dark for nearly a year until a resident began asking questions, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported.
The newspaper said the $15,000 has yet to be paid.

According to an investigation, nearly 40 people received extra payment because the village mistakenly debited their bank accounts twice.
The error was not immediately reported to the village council or the public and was not quickly fixed, according to the report by attorney Scott Howard.

The resignation of the village manager, Bryan Gruesbeck, was accepted by the council on Monday night. Another official was reprimanded and a third, Kerri Janisse, was suspended for two weeks without pay.

“Responsibility rests with the village administrator,” Howard’s report said.
Jim Janisse, who was president of the village, had pledged before the November election to pay back any money not returned by village employees, the Record-Eagle reported.

He lost his bid for re-election. Jim Janisse is married to Kerri Janisse, who was the town treasurer when the mistake occurred. She is now the zoning administrator.
