A suburban St. Louis police officer who fired on a fleeing car, seriously wounding the driver, was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to relinquish his police officer license.
Christopher Gage, 40, was sentenced Wednesday for the February 2020 shooting when he was an officer with the city of Velda, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
As part of the plea agreement, the original charges of first degree assault and armed criminal action were reduced to misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon.
Gage’s fellow service officer, Officer Matthew Schanz, was also charged with first-degree assault. His case is pending.

Gage’s attorneys, Gabe Crocker and Peter Bruntrager, said in a statement that settling the case allows Gage “to move on to the next chapters of his life.”
A St. Louis police officer was sentenced to three years probation and required to surrender his officer’s license for firing into a moving car. The driver of the vehicle was injured.
Prosecutors said Gage and Schanz pulled over a driver for expired temporary tags.

St. Louis County Attorney Wesley Bell said at a 2020 press conference announcing the charges that the driver hit and run when officers found marijuana in the car.
The 37-year-old driver was struck by gunfire from officers, causing him to crash. He was seriously injured but recovered.
