Gauteng police are investigating the source of a security threat that caused panic at some Boksburg secondary schools on Friday morning.

Lt. Col. Mavela Masondo said police were sent a voice memo that had been circulating about a bomb threat at the schools and had also received calls from some of the schools.

“We send police officers from the Explosives Units to the schools. The search was carried out and no bombs were found in any of the schools. Part of the investigation is to find out where the message or the bomb threat came from,” he said.

Gauteng education department spokesman Steve Mabona said: “At this time, there is no further information about what the threat may have been or where it came from. However, it caused panic among our Boksburg schools.”

Mabona said enrollment at Boksburg High School and the School of Achievement were affected as their exams were delayed while police implemented security measures to ensure their safety.

Education MEC Matome Chiloane said the security threat was “quite worrisome.”

“We appreciate the assistance of law enforcement agencies that have prioritized the safety of our schools,” added Chiloane.
