At least 2 dead as tornadoes ripped through Alabama, damaging homes across the Southeast

More than two dozen tornadoes were confirmed in the Deep South Tuesday and overnight Wednesday, some of which were deadly.

In Alabama, Montgomery County Emergency Management Director Christina Thornton confirmed in an emailed statement to Fox News Digital that a tornado struck the region shortly after 3:30 a.m. local time.

“We have confirmed reports that our community has lost two lives to the overnight tornado. Thanks to the heroic efforts of our first responders, many more lives were saved. We pray for our community as we mourn this tragic loss of life,” Thornton said. noting that all residences had been searched early Wednesday.

The National Weather Service office in Birmingham, Alabama, tweeted that radar had confirmed a tornado southwest of Tallassee and that it was previously near Bolyston.

In Louisiana, KNOE 8 News reported that Caldwell Parish Sheriff Clay Bennett said two people had been injured after multiple homes were damaged by a confirmed tornado.

Heavy rain from the storm brought hail the size of dimes and a tornado affected homes in Hale County, Alabama.

In addition, flood watches have been issued for parts of southeastern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama.

Videos showed high winds tossing chairs into the air, and WCBI shared photos of the damage in Mississippi, including a bridge that had been washed away.

The NWS also confirmed that tornadoes touched down in that state and received reports of people trapped in a grocery store in Caledonia.

Cindy Lawrence, director of Mississippi’s Lowndes County emergency management agency, told WTVA-TV that people inside the store made it out to safety and that a family trapped in a house a mile away had escaped. .

On Tuesday, some of Mississippi’s public school systems closed early and classes at Mississippi State University switched to remote instruction.

According to the PowerOutage.US tracker, more than 41,000 customers lost power Wednesday in Alabama and more than 13,000 in Mississippi.

The storm was expected to move toward the southeast and eastern Gulf Coast on Wednesday, and the risk of severe weather threats persists.
