Chris Hani’s killer, Janusz Walus, was stabbed to death by a fellow prisoner Tuesday morning.
The department of correctional services said Walus was “stable” and receiving medical attention from health care officials.
Department spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said Walus was stabbed to death by an inmate from the same housing unit.
Nxumalo said:
A detailed incident report will be provided at a later stage, but what can be said at this time is that inmate Walus is in stable condition and health care officials are providing the necessary care. Stabbing and other forms of riot are crimes that are not justified in a correctional setting and this case will be investigated.
Last week, the Constitutional Court ordered Walus’ conditional release.
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo said Walus is unlikely to reoffend and must be released within 10 days.
Walus killed the SACP leader in April 1993.
News24 was called by a fellow prisoner who witnessed the attempt on Walus’s life.
He said the inmate who stabbed Walus was a strong supporter of the ANC and that the incident was “politically motivated”.
“He is a supporter of the ANC. He always talks about politics. He is not a gangster or anything like that. He was stabbed Tuesday morning in the abdomen as he was walking to the shower,” he said.
He added that other inmates were not sympathetic to Walus, saying that he “got what he deserved”. He claimed that he had badmouthed blacks months before the recent ConCourt ruling.
He said that the inmate acted on his own and that the “leadership” was surprised that no one ordered him to stab Walus.
“We plan for these kinds of things and we give the right. Nobody just does something like that,” he said.
