A pilot survived a small plane crash in a Utah canyon over the weekend and walked about six miles to call for help, authorities said.

The twin-tailed, pusher-prop plane crashed near Durst Mountain, several miles up Cottonwood Canyon Road, the Mountain Green Fire Protection District said.

The pilot “made a skillful crash landing” and “miraculously got away” from the crash, according to authorities, before walking for two hours to find a cell service to call 911.

After triangulating the location of the pilot, rescuers used all-terrain vehicles to reach the crash site due to difficult terrain, fire officials said.

“Normally with these situations, we have a very difficult time finding the plane or the people,” Mountain Green Fire Chief Brian Brendel told KSL News. “In this case, he just got out of his plane, dusted himself off, and walked down this ATV road until he was within cell phone range.”

No injuries were reported, and Brendel praised the pilot for shooting down the plane “virtually in one piece.”
