MONROVIA- The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications in collaboration with its partners in the ICT Sector of Liberia, over the weekend joined the World in celebration of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, celebrated May 17th of each year.
The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is an international day proclaimed in November 2006 by the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, to be celebrated annually on 17 May.
Speaking at the program, Hon. S. Mohammed Massaley Deputy Minister for Technical Services at the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, raised awareness of the financial impact of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) on the Liberian economy.
According to him, the ICT environment in Liberia is an emerging one, as such the growth and sustainability of it requires a committed role by stakeholders in the areas of infrastructure development, broadband internet development quality network, and social inclusion.
He said the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and partners have always celebrated May 17 for the sole purpose of raising awareness on the possibilities the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as ways to bridge the digital divide.
He further said despite of the numerous challenges in the ICT sector of Liberia, the Government of Liberia is diligent to placing more emphasis on ICT.
“As we gear towards digitalizing our economy, the support of ITU cannot be overly emphasized. Therefore, we are committed to delivering our services to our people most effectively and efficiently through integrated circuit technology and more awareness that will guide our population in our ICT environment,” Deputy Minister Massaley added.
