Kiernan “AKA” Forbes was shot dead, along with another man, in a shooting at a popular nightspot on Florida Road in Durban on Friday night.
According to a first responder at the scene, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Forbes was shot while standing on the sidewalk when shots rang out shortly after 10 p.m.
Another police source confirmed that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
KwaZulu-Natal Police spokesman Robert Netshiunda confirmed to News24 that a “well-known rapper” was shot dead on Florida Road, Durban, on Friday night just after 10pm.
“I can confirm that two men were killed and one of them is a well-known rapper. The police will not release the names of the victims yet until a full investigation is completed,” Netshiunda said.
The shooting occurred in the popular entertainment district, which came to a standstill after police officers closed off the street.
RescueCare spokesman Garrith Jamieson said two men had died in the incident.
He said both had suffered gunshot wounds, and despite efforts to resuscitate one of them, he succumbed to his injuries.
Forbes was billed to perform in town on Friday night, and images posted to Instagram showed jovial scenes as the rapper toasted a table full of friends.
Efforts are underway to contact police spokespersons.
Forbes’ fiancee, Anele Tembe, died after falling from her hotel room at a Cape Town hotel in April 2021.
