The European Union legislature was preparing plans on Monday to host Volodymyr Zelenskyy in case Ukraine’s president decided to go to Brussels for an EU summit later this week.
Two sources in parliament, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, said such plans are only aimed at preparing the legislature to host Zelenskyy if security conditions allow him to attend Thursday’s meeting.
“When he came, we would be ready,” one of the sources said, stressing that due to security concerns, any decisions could only be made at the last moment.
EU leaders from the 27-nation bloc will meet for Thursday’s summit in Brussels, allowing Zelenskyy to meet all the bloc’s top leaders in one day. Zelenskyy has often addressed EU summits only via video calls from Ukraine.

Zelenskyy has long had an open invitation to come to Brussels if he wishes.
It is unclear whether Zelenskyy would be able to travel as Russian forces keep Ukrainian troops on a leash with attacks in the eastern Donbas region amid concerns that a new Russian offensive is looming.
EU Council President Charles Michel and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Kyiv last Friday, where they told Zelenskyy that he had the bloc’s relentless support in Ukraine’s fight against Russia.
The only trip outside Ukraine that Zelenskyy has made was a visit to Washington in December to seek more aid for the war and to thank Ukraine’s financial and military backing for his support.
