The bishop described the late activist as someone who “believed that only an inclusive national dialogue could be a solid foundation for the future of our country.”

Mr. Maseko was well known for being among those calling for electoral reforms in the country formerly known as Swaziland.

In 2021, Maseko along with other civil society representatives in Eswatini declined the invitation of King Mswati III to discuss the country’s political crisis at an annual national general meeting known as Sibaya.

“Sibaya cannot, and it is not an appropriate place for an inclusive dialogue and it does not have significant value in shaping our destiny and as a people. We have long lost hope in such forums and therefore will NOT be attending the meeting,” civil society representatives in Eswatini said in a statement. statement signed by Maseko.

On a January 28 statementChurch leaders in the Kingdom said the murder of Mr. Maseko is the latest “brutal and senseless murder of Swazi citizens by unknown perpetrators.”

Leaders under the auspices of the Eswatini Conference of Churches condemn the killings, saying: “Killing another human being is an abomination in the eyes of the Almighty and with dire consequences.”

Church leaders have called on their country’s government to “properly investigate” the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice.
