Groblersdal Magistrate Court sentenced Corrie Pretorius, who assaulted a teenager, to 12 months’ imprisonment or a R12,000 fine.
Pretorius appeared in court Friday for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily injury and pointing a firearm at the 16-year-old victim.
The assault occurred on June 15 last year at a fish and chip shop in the small town of Limpopo and was captured in a short video that went viral on social media.
The video showed Pretorius dragging the teen across the ground. He was also seen pointing a firearm at the teen and kicking and stomping on him. The teenager did not retaliate.
The incident unleashed the indignation of the residents, who marched to the police station demanding justice. After his arrest, Pretorius’s wife received threatening phone calls and opened an intimidation case.

The court sentenced Pretorius to R12,000 or 12 months in prison, half of which has a five-year ban, and also found him unfit to possess a firearm.
The spokesman for the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) in Limpopo, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, said the defendant pleaded guilty to the offenses and was repentant.
“State attorney Billy Mudavhi stated that the crime is serious and… prayed for direct imprisonment,” Malabi-Dzhangi added.
The NPA welcomed the ruling and said it would send a strong message to potential offenders.
