The Los Angeles Police Department released more body camera footage related to the death of Keenan Anderson, who died in police custody earlier this month.
Anderson was a cousin of Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors. The 31-year-old high school English teacher from Washington, DC, was visiting his family in Los Angeles when he called an officer about a car accident in Venice, California, on January 3.
Witnesses told the LAPD that Anderson caused the accident. The officer spoke with Anderson and called additional units for a DUI investigation.
The full-body camera video, released Monday, shows approximately seven minutes of the incident before Anderson’s arrest. He is heard discussing with an officer what led up to the accident. He can also be heard yelling “help” multiple times and even calling for a lawyer.

Anderson then runs from the officers and into traffic. Several officers carry him to the ground for several minutes. He appears to struggle with the officers before being tasered six times in 42 seconds.

Anderson was then handcuffed and taken away in an ambulance. He died at the hospital about four hours later. His autopsy and his cause of death are awaiting “safety” at the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
LAPD said Anderson experienced a medical emergency. Preliminary toxicology reports indicated that there was marijuana and cocaine in her blood.
Anderson’s family filed a claim for $50 million in damages against the city of Los Angeles. Attorney Carl Douglas announced the claim for damages at a press conference along with prominent civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, who represented the family of George Floyd in Minnesota.

“If you shock someone with 50,000 watts of electrical energy six times to the heart, are you really surprised that moments later their heart starts pounding?” Douglas said. “Is there really any surprise that moments later her heart started beating erratically? And is there any surprise that four hours later her heart couldn’t take the pressure of that Taser anymore and gave up?”
The city has yet to rule on the claim. Los Angeles police said a full investigation into Anderson’s death was underway.
